Current education programme at Te Tuhi

All schools are welcome to visit the gallery to participate in a pre booked education programme with our schools educators.  We have an exciting range of long term based and exhibition related programmes available throughout the year.  Te Tuhi's education workshops are engaging, creative and inter-curricula and are designed for school students from Year 1 to 13.  All programmes involve observing artworks and creatively responding to ideas through group discussion and practical exercises. 

Most programmes are FREE, with two available sessions on offer per day:

  • Morning 10.00 - 11.30pm
  • Afternoon 12.30 - 2.00pm

During 2012

We are delighted to have Auckland based artist Tim Chapman as our new artist in residence.  Tim will be spending time here at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts making art and contributing to our school programme with unique school workshops for students to participate in. 

This is a great opportunity for students to learn about art directly from a practicing artist!  Workshops for "Art with an artist" will be available in 2012.  These workshops offer a hands-on learning environment like no other! So enquire today!

What we will learn on our visit

During this junior Te Tuhi workshop Secret Meanings we will experience a towering Cuisenaire rod sculpture by internationally acclaimed New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai. 

We will learn about shape, colour and symbolic meaning through colour. We will discuss how Cuisenaire rods teach languages and help solve mathematical problems.

During our visit we will observe Atarangi II and discover the size, material and the many colours used in this towering sculpture. In the art studio we will celebrate the secrets of colour by creating our own personal colour wheel. We will learn what a colour wheel is, what kinds of colours are used and how to mix paint to create primary, secondary and tertiary colours.

Creative Stories Yr 4 - 8

Students share their chosen class story through role play and class posters

What we will learn on our visit

During this junior workshop Creative Stories we will learn about the various ways a story can be told.  We will explore our own chosen story through role play and creating our own poster. 

In the art studio will use bold colours, shape and imagery to design a poster that visually tells our story.  As a class we will become creative story telling artists.

What we will learn on our visit

During this Te Tuhi workshop Say cheese... we will visit an outdoor exhibition by Auckland artist Fiona Jack who will showcase 3 large photographs of the surrounding area.

We will use the exhibition to learn about light, history and technology.  In the art studio we will create our own camera obscura, an early device that influenced many of the cameras we use today.

What we will learn on our visit

During this Te Tuhi workshop Photo Chop! we will visit an art exhibition by NZ artist Graham Fletcher who creates fictional paintings that reflect the lives of cultural objects.

We will use the exhibition to learn about space, depth and technology. This will include working in groups and sharing our ideas about the art we see.  In the art studio we will use what we have learnt from the outdoor exhibition and combine magazine pictures, card and other art materials to create a 3D collage.    

Cost: $1.00 per child

What we will learn on our visit

During this Te Tuhi workshop Casting Identity we will visit an art exhibition by NZ artist Graham Fletcher who creates fictional paintings that reflect the lives of cultural objects.

We will use the exhibition to reflect upon our own identity and the identity of others.  In the art studio we will create replicas of small personal objects, by first creating moulds and then casting with plaster of paris.

Cost: $2.00 per child

What we will learn on our visit

Yr 9-13 students practice and expand their art vocabulary within gallery contexts by completing group activities and presenting ideas and opinions appropriate to the students' subject and level. The diversity of art approaches in Te Tuhi's Exhibitions are ideal for Level 2/3 students.
