Current education programme at Te Tuhi

Term One 2008

Exhibition: Land Wars

 Land Wars—Shift.  23 February – 20 April 2008

 Land Wars—Build  3 May – 29 June 2008

Land Wars is a major project to be held at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in 2008 over several platforms—two exhibitions and a published reader. Showcasing international and local artists, Land Wars will be the biggest event at Te Tuhi in 2008.  Who has control over land, and who doesn't? What are the changing circumstances for land use? Is it the end of the quarter acre dream for New Zealanders?

These are some of the most pressing questions of our time. Land Wars reveals the complex negotiations land is subject to, as well as our collective anxieties and fears around its control.

Land Wars Workshop

Students will view and discuss the exhibition. They will design and create a 3d model in the form of a Te Marae with panels depicting cultural symbols .They will design traditional Maori patterning of Kowhaiwhai and Tukutuku panels with geometrical forms to be placed  on the walls of their Marae.

This workshop examines  cultural identity, both personal and of the community.

Term Two 2008

Exhibition: 'Shock! Horror! Suspense!' Erica Van Zon

Erica van Zon is the inaugural recipient of the annual Iris Fisher scholarship, which rewards an outstanding visual arts student enrolled in an Auckland tertiary institution. A partnership between Te Tuhi and the Fisher Trust, this important new scholarship has been established in the name of Iris Fisher, a founding member of the Pakuranga Arts Society and driving force behind the creation of the Fisher Gallery, later to become the Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts.

Erica van Zon presents a witty and playful homage to the ephemera surrounding films from the 1950's and 60's. 'Shock! Horror! Suspense!' immediately evokes intense experiences of filmic thrillers. But rather than focusing on the main action, van Zon's attraction is to the more humble artefacts of films. Her sculptures hone our attention to overlooked elements of movies by recreating both props seen within the films themselves and set ornamentations that reside outside of the filmic spectacle. Alfred Hitchcock is a favourite—from a single rope referencing the famed film of the same name to her own hand painted backdrop of red bricks referencing the set of the classic Rear Window (1954).

Van Zon also recreates dozens of hand painted retro film posters that are imbued with nostalgia through the knowledge that the originals were from an era when they were drawn by artists rather than being mechanically produced. These handcrafted techniques toy with a traditional prejudice against submitting craft in art galleries. So while the ornaments have a light humour about their materials and quality, the very process of making bring to fore the gallery as an institution.

Auckland artist Peter Stichbury has a significantly growing reputation. His quirky and obsessive paintings engage in pointed dialogue with the worlds of fashion, design, and popular culture. Spanning nine years of art making, The alumni—Peter Stichbury surveys Peter's work to date, producing the first sustained and in-depth look at his art practice.

Placing an unerring finger on the cultural pulse of the times The alumni—Peter Stichbury also makes a clear case for the continued relevance of painting as a medium which can tackle the most sophisticated of contemporary questions.
