B-Sides & Demos

Tony de Lautour

12 December 2009 - 31 January 2010
Te Tuhi is pleased to host B-Sides & Demos, an extensive body of work by painter Tony de Lautour which has been toured by The Physics Room, Christchurch. First mounted earlier this year, the exhibition draws from de Lautour's personal archive of previously unexhibited drawings and preparatory works.

Collating sixteen years of source material, B-Sides & Demos conveys de Lautour's sustained development of his distinctive painterly language. The Physics Room Director Kate Montgomery states that the exhibition charts 'the artist's eclectic and adventurous processes as forms and figures cycle through the years and various configurations along the way.' As the title suggests, B-Sides & Demos represents a generous gesture on the part of the artist to present his working methods publicly.

Many of the works represented within B-Sides & Demos wouldn't normally find themselves on show. As a result the well recognised features of de Lautour's painted practice are realised for the first time in many of these playful preparatory works as paper bags, envelopes, beer coasters, magazines and catalogues all become useful fodder for de Lautour's rigorous drawing processes.
